Coach Tom Martinez died Tuesday on his 66th birthday, suffering a heart attack during a dialysis treatment.
Martinez became known for his work with Tom Brady, who worked with the coach since 1992, when a then 15-year-old Brady was brought by his father to him for instruction.
Martinez was one of the most successful coaches in California community college history, coaching at the the College of San Mateo until 2005. He also worked with John Elway in his youth and with Jamarcus Russell prior to him being drafted by the Oakland Raiders.
Martinez suffered from diabetes and was waiting on a kidney transplant at the time of his death.
Brady had been known for visiting Martinez during every off-season to work on technique and had been very active in helping his mentor find a kidney donor.
