In a surprise move, the Patriots released WR Deion Branch today, Tom Curran of CSNNE.com reports.
Branch has a hamstring injury and was listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts, but there were no indications throughout the week that it was something major.
Major or not, they cut him and brought up receiver Greg Salas from the practice squad. These two crossed paths before when the team traded for Salas in September, only to release him and re-sign Branch, who they let go before the season started.
As usual, we don't know what the team and Branch discussed, but as history tells us, we may see Branch return soon and Salas heading back to the practice squad.
Should Branch clear waivers on Monday, he's available to any team.
In other moves, the Pats also released CB Malcolm Williams to make room for Aqib Talib.
