After starting 7-1, the Chicago Bears went from top of the NFC to out of the playoffs.
The hot seat Lovie Smith has been sitting on for a few years finally burned him. Smith was fired today as reported by Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.
Smith coached the Bears for 9 seasons, making the playoffs 3 times and 1 Super Bowl appearance. However, Smith and the Bears had missed the playoffs 5 out of the past 6 years.
An aging defense and an offense that needs to be retooled were the main reasons for Smith’s dismissal.
Also, GM Phil Emery, who was recently hired was told that Smith would be retained for the 2012 season; however, now that the season is over, Emery now has the chance to bring in his own choice to coach the Bears.
