Talk about pressure, Jason Garrett is coaching in the same stadium with the guy who may want his job, Mike Holmgren. Holmgren can pretty much call his own shots on where he wants to coach, so having a guy like that looking over your shoulder creates a very cold shadow. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Holmgren only has one preference, and that is the Dallas Cowboys.
He has denied interest - "I don’t know how any of that stuff gets started", he said, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. However, Jerry Jones has spoken on the subject and was suggestive in a subtle manner.
“I won’t and can’t get into that kind of conversation because of how fired up I am about the future of Jason. The future is now, but also I am fired up about him and what he can be coaching the Dallas Cowboys. Mike Holmgren, I can’t tell you on a individual basis how much I respect him. He’s everything you would want as far as a coach is concerned and I appreciate, it was a compliment, when he was talking about how he was impressed with our talent and the fact that we could work together. And that’s just the case. But make no mistake about it. And Mike doesn’t need me to say what a great guy he is. Our fans probably need to hear he’s a great guy. Bottom line, it’s all about Jason with me.” Jones said via Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas.
Jones is hungry to get to a Super Bowl, and Garrett seems to just hold the ship steady, but not enough to get them over the hump.
There’s no chance Sean Payton will get away from New Orleans, leaving Holmgren as the prime target. If Jones could convince Bill Parcells to coach the Cowboys, we’re sure he can convince Holmgren.
