Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine jumps ship for Buffalo, hired by Bills

Rex Ryan had said he’d hoped former defensive coordinator Mike Pettine would return. Pettine will return to the AFC East, but not with the New York Jets.

On Wednesday, Doug Marrone coach of the Buffalo Bills will hire the former Jets defensive coordinator for the same position in Buffalo, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com. Rex Ryan had spoke about Pettine on Tuesday during his press conference:

"We had the conversations, and Mike thinks it's best that he go to a different team as defensive coordinator, and I wish him all the best unless he goes to Buffalo," Ryan said in jest. "I hope he doesn't take that job.

I hope he goes somewhere else."

It’s a double blow for the Jets, as now Pettine who has extensive knowledge of Ryan’s unique system, can now inform new Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett of how the Jets defense operates and its tendencies.

Pettine wanted to get out of the shadow of Ryan who oversees the entire Jets defense, and now gets a chance to go head to head with Ryan instead. Guess the joke Ryan made wasn’t off base, or funny to Ryan now.
