Former football star Junior Seau found dead in apparent suicide at Oceanside home

Former San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots football star Junior Seau, 43,  was found dead Wednesday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest at his home in Oceanside.

His girlfriend found him unconscious and a 911 call came from the home around 9:30 a.m., according to sources.  Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy told the media a handgun was found near his body in a bedroom by officers responding to the call from his girlfriend.

Paramedics tried to revive him to no avail. "This case, at this point, is being investigated as a suicide," McCoy said.

In 2010, Seau was involved in an accident in which his vehicle went off a beachside cliff. The accident happened after he was arrested in Oceanside for domestic violence.

Media footage aired as police swarmed around the home. The San Diego coroner's office could not confirm any information.

He may have thought this one out by shooting himself in the chest, it being similar to the way former Chicago Bear Dave Duerson committed suricide on Feb. 17th, so that his brain could be examined for symptoms of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).

More to come.
