Donte' Stallworth heads to IR with high ankle sprain, Pats to sign Deion Branch

Last night, we joked as receiver Donte' Stallworth hauled in a deep Tom Brady pass and fought a few defenders on the way to the end zone, that the Patriots would probably release him in the next few days.

Then this news comes down. Not a release as we joked, but injured reserve after his first game in his return to the Patriots. Seems he suffered a high ankle sprain on the touchdown. Tough break for Stallworth, who jumped right in to contribute to the the Pats offense.

On top of that, a team source has told NFL.com's Albert Breer that Deion Branch will replace him. Branch was released on November 17th after suffering a hamstring injury. He cleared waivers and had pretty much disappeared until today.

He'll now join a receiving corps that seems to change by the week.

Stallworth was brought in immediately after Julian Edelman suffered a season-ending broken foot, and now Branch immediately replaces him.

In other moves, the Patriots parted ways with TE Visanthe Shiancoe, who just didn't work out with the team. After signing a one-year, $1.2 million deal, he spent the beginning of the season on injured reserve, and when he returned, played in four games without a reception.
