Well the Cincinnati Bengals did it. After choosing to use the franchise tag on place-kicker Mike Nugent, and then allowing him to leave for free agency, the Cincinnati Bengals finally signed safety Reggie Nelson.
Big pickup: Bengals reached agreement with safety Reggie Nelson. Jets now will need to look elsewhere.
Nelson had been visiting with the New York Jets since Friday and left Saturday afternoon with a contract offer from the Jets, deciding to take his time to make a decision on his future -- or to allow other teams, like the Bengals to make a counter-offer.
Nelson is coming off a career-year with 85 tackles, two quarterback sacks, 115 interception return yards and two forced fumbles (all personal bests) and his first career touchdown. Additionally his four interceptions is the second-highest in his career.
Though he's returning as a free agent, he's still the team's third free agent acquisition since Saturday (well since the start of free agency) with cornerback Jason Allen and offensive guard Travelle Wharton.
