San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith will miss tonight’s game vs. the Chicago Bears due to lingering effects from a concussion suffered against St. Louis last week.
Smith couldn’t get through the battery of concussion tests, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported. Colin Kaepernick, who has played in limited situations, will get the start.
The second year quarterback from Nevada will give the 49ers the opportunity to evaluate him and see if he has any long term potential.
He was drafted in the 2nd round, 36th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and is seen as the future for the 49ers. In limited duty, Kaepernick has a QB Rating of 86.4, 206 yards, and no touchdowns.
